Back to the 90′s 2: Anime TV Series

We can call these animes as soap operas for kids.

When we were young (o aminin na, di na tayo bata), we would watch these after playing on the streets or sometimes before we go to school (in my case, I had afternoon classes back then).

Almost all of these animes are from World Masterpiece Theater by Nippon Animation.
ABS-CBN bought the TV rights.

Cedie: Ang Munting Prinsipe

English Title: Little Lord Fauntleroy
Japanese Title: Shoukoushi Ceddie (Little Prince Cedie)
Based on the novel,”Little Lord Fauntleroy” by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

Who could forget this? Si Tom Taus pa nga ang gumanap nito sa pelikula at pumunta pa talaga sila ng New York to shoot this. Anyway, ang hirap naman palang i-pronounce nung English title kaya pala iniba nila.hehe

Sarah: Ang Munting Prinsesa

Just found out that Cedie and Sarah were based on novels by the same author. Kaya pala parang pareho yung mood ng story.

Dog of Flanders

Book: Dog of Flanders by Maria Louise Ramé

Not much info regarding this but if you remember Nelo and Patrasche (take note of the spelling ha lol) then ito yung anime na yun. Si Nelo who played the violin, lived with his lolo at syempre taga-lako ng gatas! (thanks to Kim and Erns for making me remember– see their comments below)

Ang Pamilya von Trapp

English Title: Trapp Family Story
Japanese Title: Trapp Ikka Monogatari
Based on the novel, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp

We all know that this one’s inspired by The Sound of Music. Didn’t really watch this like I watched Sarah and Cedie. Like a boring book, I just scanned through it.

Mga Munting Pangarap ni Romeo

English Title: Romeo and the Black Brothers
Japanese Title: Romio no aoi sora /Romeo’s Blue Skies
Based on the novel, Die Schwarzen Brüder (“The Black Brothers”) by the Jewish author Kurt Held

Remi, Nobody’s Girl

Japanese Title: Ie Naki Ko Remi
Based on the novel, Sans famille by Hector Malot.(In Sans famille, Rémi is a boy.)

Wikipedia says Nippon pulled this out because of disastrous ratings. Ang drama naman kasi nito tsaka namatay pa yung bida (oops did I say spoiler alert? lol). Wala syang entertaining factor gaya ng Cedie or Sarah.

Peter Pan

Crocodile – When Peter fought Hook long ago, this crocodile ate Hook’s right hand. Ever since then, he’s been trying to eat the rest of him. This croc also happened to had swallowed a clock, which is the cause of the ticking sound that accompanies him.

I really enjoyed watching this as a kid. One of the best from World Masterpiece Theater. I remember that Earl Ignacio voiced Peter Pan in the local version of this.

The Seven Powers

In order to use their magic, Jules and Julie would hold hands and say, for example, “We call upon the Third of the Seven Powers to blow up the wall.”
The First Power
Illusion : The Twins can temporarily create illusions which, on several occasions, distract and confuses their enemies.
The Second Power
Protection : When holding hands, the Twins can protect themselves from attack.
The Third Power
Explosions : Jules and Julie are also informed that they can cause objects to shatter and break apart.
The Fourth Power
Levitation/Telekinesis
The Fifth Power
Mechanical Control : Allowing the Twins to manipulate and operate complex machinery.
The Sixth Power
Weather Control : This allowed the Twins to control weather patterns to a small degree.
The Seventh Power
Mind Control : This allowed the Twins to influence the thoughts of others. Giovan explains, however, that this power should be used as a last resort, as it causes extreme fatigue.

Wow, I totally forgot about the 7 powers! This is my favorite anime. One amazing anime! I gotta have a copy of this!

Nadia: Ang Mahiwagang Kwintas

English Title: Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water
Japanese Title: Fushigi no Umi no Nadia?
Inspired by the works of Jules Verne, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea

Kaya pala the story seemed familiar. They got the idea from the Jules Verne book pala. Sabi ko na nga ba eh. Bata pa ko, iinisip ko na, na ang story nitong Mahiwagang Kwintas ay from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Time Quest

English Title: Time Travel Tondekeman
Japanese Title: Taimu Toraburu Tondekeman?

Wow! How can I forget this! Favorite ko toooooooo! waaaah! I will buy a DVD copy of this. Remember Takure???
In fairness, maganda ang pagkaka-dub nito in Tagalog. Nakakaaliw at nakakatawa talaga siya!
